The Postive Effect of Video Games on Young Children

Video games are an ever-present part of almost all children’s lives. Whether children play on a computer, lap top, IPod, IPhone, cell phone, or tablet, many children have daily assess to video games. For this reason many research has examined the effects that video games have on young children. Granic, Lobel, and Engels (2014) reported that â€Å"video games are a ubiquitous part of almost all children’s and adolescents’ lives, with 97% playing for at least one hour per day in the United States† (p.1). Currently, researchers have found that the vast majority of studies have been on its negative impact. Some of the potential harms related to video games are exposure to violence, addiction, and lack of social skills. However, as parents it is our duty to monitor young children’s choices to ensure that they are playing games that are developmentally appropriate for them. This essay will examine the research that supports the effectiveness of video games in enhancing children’s learning and focusing on cognitive, literacy, and social development. In the last decade, the manner in which video games have been generated has radically been transformed. This alteration allowed a small but significant body of research to transpire.
